How This Balance Board Became Our Favorite Mother-Daughter Ritual
Hey, I'm Sarah. Mom to a 7-year-old firecracker named Lily. Between work, school drop-offs, and chasing her around, "me time" doesn't exist. But last year, something clicked – or rather, cracked. My lower back was killing me. Too much hunching over a laptop, too much stress, not enough movement.
I bought this Toibena balance board hoping to sneak in 10 minutes of exercise while Lily watched TV. Figured I'd hide it in the corner and use it when she wasn't demanding my attention.
Yeah, that didn't happen.
The moment the box arrived, Lily was all over it. "What's that, Mommy? Can I try? Is it a skateboard?" Before I could even unbox it properly, she was dragging the board into the living room, desperate to stand on it.
First try? She wobbled, giggled, and fell off after 3 seconds. Then she got back on. And again. And again. Pretty soon she was yelling, "Mommy, watch me! I'm a surfer!"
I finally got my turn after she went to bed. First wobble? Humiliating. I couldn't even last 5 seconds. My 7-year-old was better than me. But something about that cork roller under my feet felt... good. Different from those squishy foam rollers at yoga class. It was firm, stable, and somehow made me want to try again.
Now? It's our thing.
Every afternoon after homework, Lily runs to get "our board." We take turns. She cheers when I hit 20 seconds. I cheer when she tries the harder level. We have "balance battles" before dinner. Her record is 47 seconds. Mine? Don't ask. But my back doesn't hurt anymore.
Last week she told me, "Mommy, when I grow up, I'm gonna teach surfing in California." I said, "Honey, we live in Minnesota." She goes, "So? We have our board!"
Can't argue with that.
Bottom line: I bought this for my back. What I got was a front-row seat to watching my daughter build confidence, balance, and a dream. Worth every penny.
